How to Pack a Child for Travel?

Traveling with a child is a real challenge. Children have their own rules, and packing their belongings can sometimes be confusing. But what if you let the child take what they like and pack their suitcase together? In today’s article, we will look at how to pack a child for travel!

Packing Children’s Belongings – Backpack or Suitcase?

When we think about packing for a summer or winter vacation, the first question that comes to mind is – what should we use to pack the child for travel? Should we let them take only carry-on luggage and put the rest in the large checked baggage? Or should we buy a children’s cabin suitcase and pack their things in it?

It all depends on how long we will be traveling and the destination we have chosen. If it’s a weekend trip, only the most necessary items can fit in the child’s backpack. But if we have chosen a longer vacation, it’s good to teach the child to pack by themselves or with the help of one of the parents and take only what they really need. In this case, we recommend buying a cabin suitcase for children. This way, the child will feel that the suitcase is theirs alone and that they need to fit all their things inside it.

What Clothes to Take?

Once we know what we will use to pack the child, it’s important to think about what clothes to take. Every child has a favorite sweater, t-shirt, or dress. Let the child choose what they would like to take with them, explaining what the weather will be like and suggesting which clothes will be more comfortable.

It’s important to teach the child two basic principles of packing from an early age:

Preparing clothing sets. A set should include everything – from underwear and socks to a t-shirt, pants, or dress. You can add a long-sleeve blouse, sweater, or sweatshirt that can be worn more than once. Teach the child to choose clothes that will match more than one set. For example, if you take a sweater, choose one that fits both a dress and long pants for cooler days.

Rolling clothes. This is the second very important rule when packing. Mainly, rolled clothes take up less space in the luggage. Also, rolled clothes don’t wrinkle as much during travel. Among good packing tips, we recommend rolling ready-made sets immediately. Underwear can be placed on top of a t-shirt or dress and the whole set rolled up. Space-saving is guaranteed!

What Toys to Take?

Every child has their favorite toys or a soft bunny they can’t part with. We can’t forget them when traveling on vacation. Ask the child what they would most like to take with them. You can use the method of convincing the little one that during the vacation they can take only one toy due to limited luggage space.

When thinking about games and free time, it’s always good to have a notebook and pen or a few colored pencils on hand so the child can draw. This is a great idea for boredom, especially in bad weather. If you like playing board games with your child, don’t forget to take their favorite game in the luggage. You can buy a pocket version of the game or take cards, which don’t take up much space. If the child is used to reading before bed, don’t forget to take their favorite book.
