What materials are hard cabin suitcases made from?

The cabin suitcase is one of the most convenient and frequently taken pieces of luggage during travel. Its construction affects not only the appearance but also the weight, resistance to damage, or deformation. What materials are hard cabin suitcases most commonly made from? We explore this in today’s article!

When deciding to purchase a cabin suitcase, it is important to pay attention not only to the appearance, color, shape, or features but also to the material it is made from.

Materials used to make hard cabin suitcases

ABS suitcases

Hard cabin suitcases made from ABS are known for their durability and scratch resistance. The ABS material is non-toxic and safe for people.

The abbreviation ABS comes from the names of its three components – acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene. These make ABS suitcases hard, heat-resistant, and more flexible. Changes in the proportions of the components affect the suitcase’s characteristics, so different ABS suitcase models may vary from each other. An example of a cabin suitcase made from ABS Plus is WINGS MACAW 18" or WINGS CAMARO 20".

It is important to note that ABS is a material we use daily. Perhaps not everyone knows, but it is used in the production of toys, household appliances, interior car parts, and refrigerators. It is a very popular material – hard, scratch-resistant, and relatively inexpensive. The downside of this material is its low flexibility, which can lead to cracks under stronger loads. Therefore, it is important not to overload the suitcase, as strong pressure when closing can cause damage. However, the modification of ABS material ensures it will be more flexible and more resistant to pressure.

Polypropylene suitcases

Polypropylene is one of the most commonly used materials for producing high-quality suitcases. It is extremely flexible and very impact-resistant. Like ABS, polypropylene is a widely used plastic, for example in construction for making pipes and HVAC systems, in the automotive industry for body parts, and in medicine – for syringes and medicine packaging.

When we talk about polypropylene suitcases, they are very light and more durable than those made from ABS. Often, a blend of polypropylene and polycarbonate is used in suitcase production, which further affects the product’s weight. This is one of the major advantages of this solution – a polypropylene suitcase is one of the lightest on the market!

An example of a cabin suitcase made from polypropylene is WINGS SPARROW or WINGS MALLARD.

Polycarbonate suitcases

Polycarbonate is currently one of the most popular and strongest materials for suitcase production. It has been used for making suitcases since around 2000. It is very durable and resistant to all kinds of damage. Polycarbonate, also called polycarbonate, is mainly used for making tough, shatter-resistant glass but can also be found in CDs.

Cabin suitcases made from polycarbonate are the most resistant to all kinds of mechanical damage. Such a suitcase will withstand even the most stressful moments at the airport or in the airplane’s luggage compartment. An example of a polycarbonate suitcase is WINGS PC GOLDEN EAGLE and the entire collection of our children’s suitcases.
