Which Suitcase Should We Choose - Hard or Soft?

When we set off on a trip, especially by plane, we usually travel with a wheeled suitcase. This is probably the most practical luggage that allows us to move easily, even if we have packed heavy items. The choice of suitcases on the market is huge, but every small and large suitcase has its own features that make it more suitable for certain conditions. Hard suitcase or soft – here are a few words about choosing a suitcase.

The most important thing is functionality

Browsing through suitcase collections can be confusing. This is even more challenging when we really want to make a successful purchase and have the suitcase serve us in excellent condition for many years. Is there a good large suitcase that is perfect for every situation? Modern suitcases are definitely designed to survive various conditions, but some models are more suitable for certain tasks than others. Therefore, we should always consider where we travel most often and by what means of transport. The purpose of the suitcase will determine its shape and material. Regarding the latter, the choice is between soft and hard suitcases. Each type of material has its specific characteristics.

Soft suitcases – advantages

Soft suitcases remain very popular. The models available in the Wings store are made from extremely durable material, nylon, which makes them as durable as hard suitcases, but at the same time flexible, lightweight, and water-resistant. Here you will also find a soft suitcase made from very strong material, such as Codura 1200D. This is a material resistant to mechanical damage, tears, and punctures. The biggest advantage of soft suitcases is that they can easily fit into the luggage compartment, slightly changing their shape if needed. This makes these materials especially suitable for cabin suitcases, which must be placed on the overhead luggage rack in the plane. They usually also have front pockets and sometimes side compartments, which makes packing organization easier.

Limitations of soft suitcases

The disadvantages usually mentioned are that these suitcases do not provide as good protection for the contents, are more prone to creasing, and can get dirty more easily compared to hard models. They are also harder to clean. They offer less protection for fragile items, so it is advisable to protect them additionally in soft suitcases by placing them between clothes or, if necessary, in bubble wrap.

Advantages of hard suitcases

Hard suitcases also have their supporters. The materials they are made from, especially those used in Wings suitcases, such as ABS Plus or polypropylene, are characterized by their durability against dents, scratches, and are harder to tear if someone tries to open them without authorization. For this reason, a large hard suitcase will always be a good choice. Such luggage should be placed in the luggage compartment; we do not have it with us, and we really care about protecting the contents. Also, we do not know if every airport staff member will handle our suitcase carefully enough. It is also an ideal suitcase for those who value cleanliness. A hard suitcase is easier to clean from dust and can be deeply cleaned if it gets more soiled.

Disadvantages of hard suitcases

It should be remembered that hard models may be difficult to fit into small compartments and that they do not have external pockets or compartments, which can be inconvenient if we want to always have small items at hand. Although rare, hard suitcases can crack under pressure or when thrown. This can happen at the airport, where the handling staff does not always treat suitcases with the necessary care.

Which suitcase is more suitable for a plane?

Soft or hard suitcases – which are more suitable for a plane? It depends. Large luggage placed in the luggage compartment must be damage-resistant. Both types of suitcases have this characteristic, but we should choose the best material resistant to various conditions. For a soft suitcase, it is good to choose a material like Codura 1200D. Such suitcases are resistant to tearing or puncturing. The strongest hard Wings suitcases are made of polypropylene. These are strong, durable, hard suitcases that protect their contents excellently. You can take your carry-on in a soft suitcase to have convenient access to small items thanks to additional external pockets.

What suitcase to choose for traveling by train or car?

Choosing a suitcase for traveling by train or car is a bit easier. Here we always have full control over our luggage and take care of its condition. We can choose a hard or soft suitcase made from material that is less resistant to damage. This material protects the interior well and ensures the suitcase’s durability, but it is also a cheaper option. Among soft suitcases, nylon should be especially noted, and among hard suitcases – ABS+. We can choose models made from different materials and enjoy the durability and comfort the suitcase provides, whether we choose a soft or hard model.

Soft suitcases – ideal when traveling with a small child

Although a hard suitcase is excellent for almost any trip, when traveling on vacation with a small child, a soft suitcase can be more practical. Why? It’s about the numerous external pockets and compartments, of course. A small child needs many accessories that make caring for them easier. Diapers, change of clothes, but also pacifiers and rattles – all of these need to be within reach. Putting them inside the suitcase requires opening it every time, which is very inconvenient when the child is in your arms. Having compartments significantly simplifies things. You can easily reach for the external pocket to change a diaper or give a toy to the child.
