Wakacje z niemowlakiem – o czym należy pamiętać?

Vacationing with a Baby – What You Need to Remember

Traveling with a small child is certainly different from traveling alone. If you are planning a family vacation with an infant, it’s worth preparing well by ensuring child-friendly conditions and greater comfort for yourself, so that the holiday trip is peaceful and guarantees rest for both children and adults.

First vacation with an infant – a different kind of rest than before

Vacations with an infant and a small child are definitely different from those spent alone. They are not entirely about rest in the classic sense. Caring for a little one is quite demanding in itself, so you need to be prepared before the trip that it won’t be a break from all responsibilities. However, it can still be an enjoyable vacation if you prepare well. The change of scenery, beautiful views, and a break from everyday life are what you can expect. Young parents on their first trip are sometimes surprised that they can’t just lie freely on the beach or climb peaks together – depending on how you like to spend your holiday. But this doesn’t mean it won’t be restful. It’s worth finding a moment for yourself by sharing childcare duties. If the child is a bit older, you can look for family attractions where the whole family can have a good time.

Plane, car, or train – how to travel with a little one?

When going on vacation with an infant, a one-year-old, or a slightly older child, consider which mode of transport to choose. A plane is a good option for slightly older children, although of course you can also fly with an infant. Usually, however, it is a tiring journey for everyone – the child, the parents, and fellow passengers. The little one feels pressure changes, so they usually cry during takeoff and landing. The solution is to feed the child during these difficult moments, which helps calm them and relieve ear pain.
Traveling by car is a convenient idea. Of course, you need to bring a car seat to ensure the child’s safety. Many children fall asleep in the car, making the trip very peaceful. Moreover, you can always take breaks during the drive to rest.
Traveling by train can be just as comfortable. The child can sleep in a stroller. You can also walk with them around the train, making the journey more enjoyable. This way, it’s easier to have a peaceful vacation right from the start, compared to managing a little one in a narrow airplane seat. Regardless of how you travel, choose rather short trips to nearby places to minimize the inconveniences of traveling with small children.

Destination – don’t bite off more than you can chew

The first vacation with an infant is always a challenge. Before you start exploring faraway lands, choose a destination not too far away to see how the child reacts to travel. This is a good time to return to already tested places. Choose accommodation in a convenient location. It’s best if it’s somewhere quiet, not in the center of holiday attractions, as nightlife can make every night difficult. If the child is a bit older and you plan to relax on the beach, check where the nearest access point is. Remember that the child needs many accessories, which can be cumbersome to carry. It’s also worth taking care of your own comfort and the convenience of the whole family.

Accessories worth taking on a trip with an infant

It doesn’t matter much whether you travel with an infant for a longer or shorter time. Every little one needs many accessories. Consider whether some of them can be bought locally. This concerns bulky items like diapers, formula milk, or wet wipes. You should also check if the accommodation offers a sleeping place for the child. If not, it’s worth bringing your own travel cot to ensure everyone sleeps comfortably. Travel cots are sometimes available in hotels.
A small child needs many clothes for all kinds of weather. Remember T-shirts or bodysuits with short sleeves and long sleeves, but also warmer clothes just in case. A head covering is essential to protect from the sun. Of course, a stroller is necessary to be able to walk freely. This applies both to infants and small children, with whom you can explore more as long as the child can rest in the stroller.

Large travel suitcases that make packing everything for yourself and your child easier

Contrary to appearances, the amount of things a small child needs on a trip is quite large. When traveling with a little one, it’s worth equipping yourself with large suitcases so you can easily fit everything you need. This applies to traveling by plane, car, or train. In a car, the trunk size is a limitation, but many parents at this stage of life choose large family cars with trunks that can fit suitcases and a stroller. It’s a great opportunity to choose sturdy suitcases that will last for many years. They not only hold everything necessary but also protect the contents of the luggage. When traveling with a child, it’s good to have a small bag or case, or a backpack where all the essential small items like diapers, change of clothes, snacks for children, or milk for infants can be kept.

The timing of a vacation with an infant matters

The first weeks of a baby’s life are usually a revolution at home, so it’s worth waiting to travel until the whole family gets used to each other. If you plan a vacation with an infant and want to spend time outdoors, the weather obviously matters. Heatwaves are exhausting for both the child and the parents, so it’s not worth flying in the middle of summer with a little one to warm countries in southern Europe, where temperatures can exceed 40 degrees Celsius at that time. You can visit these regions with a child in spring or late autumn when it’s pleasantly warm and sunny. Madeira, called the island of eternal spring, is also a great option. There you’ll find not only a pleasant climate but also many places for enjoyable walks with spectacular views.
In Poland, spring and summer are ideal times, although the weather can be unpredictable. It can be cold and rainy but also hot like in Africa.

Is it even worth traveling with an infant?

Some people question the point of traveling with an infant. A common argument is that the child won’t remember anything anyway. That’s true, but the purpose of traveling is not only to remember where you’ve been but to experience the world here and now, and in this, little ones are the best. The warmth of the sand, the coolness of the water, the smells, the tastes – the child will experience all of this on the trip, and it all influences their development in every way. By traveling, you open up the world to them, showing its diversity, even if they are still too young to realize it.

Vacations with an infant are a new experience. It’s worth preparing well by bringing items and accessories that make traveling easier, as well as wisely choosing the destination and timing of the trip to spend it pleasantly, allowing the parents to rest at least a little.
