How do you pack for a trip with a child?
Vacationing with a child is quite a challenge. Kids have a mind of their own, and packing their things can sometimes be a real headache. But what if you let your child pick out what they like and pack their suitcase together? W today’s post, we’ll show you how to pack your child for a trip!
Packing kids' stuff—backpack or suitcase?
When we think about packing for a summer or winter trip, the first question that comes to mind is: what should we pack for our child? Should we let them take only a small backpack and put the rest in a large checked bag? Or should we opt to buy a children’s carry-on suitcase and pack the little one’s things in there?
It all depends on how long we’re going for and where we’re going. If it’s just a weekend trip, you can try packing the essentials into a kids’ backpack. However, if you’ve decided on a week-long or longer vacation, it’s a good idea to teach your child from a young age to pack sensibly—either on their own or with a parent’s help—and to take only what they’ll definitely need. W this case, we recommend buying a carry-on suitcase for children. This way, the child will feel that the suitcase is theirs alone and that they must fit all their belongings inside it.
What clothes should I pack?
Once we know what to pack for our child, it’s worth considering what clothes we should bring along. Every child has their favorite sweater, T-shirt, or dress. Let your child decide for themselves what clothes they’d like to bring, while suggesting what the weather will be like and advising them on what they’ll feel most comfortable in.
It’s a good idea to teach your child two basic packing rules from an early age:
Packing outfits. By "outfit," we mean a complete set—from underwear and socks to a T-shirt, shorts, or a dress. We can also add a long-sleeved blouse, a sweater, or a hoodie, which can be mixed and matched and will be worn more than just once. Teach your child to put together outfits and choose clothes that will work with more than one outfit. For example, if you’re packing a sweater, choose one that will go with both a dress and long pants for cooler days.
Rolling clothes. This is the second, very important rule when it comes to packing. First of all, rolled clothes take up less space in your luggage. And second, rolled-up clothes won’t get as wrinkled during the trip. Among the best packing tips, we recommend rolling up ready-to-wear outfits right away. You can place underwear on top of a T-shirt or dress and roll up the entire set. Guaranteed space savings!
What toys should you bring?
Every child has favorite toys or stuffed animals they can’t bear to part with. We mustn’t forget them when going on vacation. Let’s ask our child what they’d most like to bring along. We can use a strategy where we convince our little one that they can bring just one toy on vacation due to limited space in the luggage.
When thinking about playtime and leisure, it’s a good idea to always have a notebook and pen or a few crayons on hand so your child can draw. It’s a great way to beat boredom, especially during bad weather. If you own and usually play board games with your child, make sure to pack their favorite one in your luggage. You can buy a pocket-sized version of the game or bring along a deck of cards, which take up relatively little space. If your child is used to reading before bed, don’t forget to pack their favorite book.
