As every year in September, the Polish Chamber of Tourism prepared a report on Poles' foreign vacations in 2023. The results summarizing the holiday season leave no doubt: as many as 75% of us chose vacations lasting 7-8 days. Check out which practices are worth adopting to fit everything you need for a week-long trip into one suitcase or backpack!
Tip 1: Make a list of the most essential items
We have analyzed many ready-made packing lists published online, useful for short trips or week-long vacations, especially for you. Preparing it shouldn’t take you much time!
Your suitcase must include items such as:
-
Clothing:
-
a supply of t-shirts or blouses for each day of the week
-
2-3 pairs of long and/or short pants or skirts/dresses
-
a sweatshirt or sweater
-
a jacket or raincoat
-
pajamas
-
sports shoes or other spare footwear
-
headwear
-
underwear
-
-
Favorite cosmetics, especially sunscreen
-
Documents, such as ID card, passport, driver’s license
-
Accessories, including a beach towel, sunglasses, swimming/diving gear, swimsuit
-
Electronic equipment: mobile phone, charger and/or powerbank, smartwatch, camera, laptop, tablet, or notebook
Tip 2: Adjust our list to your planned activities
Although our list is universal, it won’t be 100% perfect for everyone. Personalize it according to your own needs. If you’re going to a business dinner or a date, add an elegant shirt or dress and dress shoes to the list. Planning a mountain climb? An extra pair of shoes (preferably trekking), a storm jacket, and crampons will come in handy.
Also, to avoid rummaging through your entire wardrobe, before you start packing, check the list of amenities provided by the hotel or hostel where you plan to stay. Many places offer guests cosmetics, towels, a hairdryer, an iron, and even laundry facilities with a washer and dryer.
Tip 3: Check the climate and weather forecast at your destination
You’ve probably heard the term “mixed weather.” Unfortunately, no country has a monopoly on it. Unpredictable weather conditions can occur not only in London but also in Iceland, Norway, tropical countries, mountains, or by the Polish sea. Before flying to these destinations, check the weather forecast several times: before you start packing, a few days before the trip, and on the day of departure. In case of rain, snow, or a strong cold snap, always be ready to add extra clothing to your suitcase.
Tip 4: Roll clothes instead of folding them into squares
This is a way to save a lot of space in your backpack or suitcase! First, iron your clothes. Then lay them flat on a surface like a bed or carpet. To straighten a shirt or pants, fold the sleeves or legs inward and roll the garment as tightly as you can. You can pack blouses, dresses, pants, skirts, and jumpsuits this way. Rolled clothes take up less space and won’t require careful ironing. Detailed instructions on how to roll clothes are available in another blog post.
Tip 5: Pack items in the right order
Start by packing the heaviest items at the bottom of the suitcase. Also place large, bulky items like shoes, a hat, a mirror, or small sports equipment there. Put socks or small items inside the shoes that you won’t need during the trip. You can also place, for example, a glasses case at the bottom to store valuables and jewelry. Valuables packed deep will be less accessible to potential thieves.
Next, put the rolled clothes in the suitcase, making sure the clothes fit tightly together. The next step is to layer thicker clothes. In the cabin suitcase, place a warm sweatshirt, sweater, and other important items spread across the width of the suitcase. To save space, roll belts into a spiral. To gain more free space, sleeves of sweaters and legs of thick pants can be tucked into gaps between rolled clothes. Then we recommend putting underwear packed in cotton bags into the suitcase. Also set aside space for dirty underwear, sealed in plastic bags, for example.
Finally, pack cosmetics in the main compartment. When packing for a 7-day trip, also use the side compartments of the suitcase. In a mesh zippered pocket, you can put sunglasses, a book, or documents such as a passport, plane tickets, or hotel reservations.
Tip 6: Pack electronic equipment separately
To avoid damage to your camera or laptop during airport baggage handling, pack such electronic equipment in a separate backpack. At wings24.pl, we offer special laptop backpacks with a velcro-secured, reinforced compartment for a notebook. The side pockets of such a backpack conveniently hold chargers or USB cables for charging smartphones, iPhones, smartwatches, electric toothbrushes, or shavers.
Tip 7: Take mini versions of cosmetics and towels
When traveling by plane, it’s best to bring cosmetics in sealed bottles of 100 milliliters. This is the maximum volume accepted by airlines. 100ml liquid containers will protect your luggage from spills, for example, if shampoo or gel accidentally opens in the baggage hold. You can easily find them in most drugstores. For a week-long trip, we also recommend taking smaller towels instead of large ones. Sports towels made of quick-drying, thin material that are easy to roll work perfectly for this purpose.
Extra tip: Make clever money stashes
Instead of keeping all your banknotes in your wallet, you can divide your money into two or three parts and hide them in unexpected places, such as the mentioned glasses case or an empty face cream jar. You can also use a lipstick case or a special hidden wallet as a stash for banknotes.
Week-long vacation – what can I skip?
Do you dream of having free hands during your trip? You can minimize your carry-on luggage by sharing your packing list with friends. A friend or colleague can bring, for example, a shared charger, hairdryer, or even a stand for an electric toothbrush with you in mind. Sharing with others is not only a trick for more comfortable travel. It’s also a great opportunity to strengthen bonds with your travel companions! If you’re traveling alone on a week-long trip, you might consider purchasing checked baggage. When carrying valuables in it, it’s safest to buy baggage insurance just in case.
How to pack a suitcase for 7 days – knowledge in a nutshell
If you plan to transport your belongings in checked baggage for a short trip, avoid bringing sharp objects that might raise suspicion with airport security. Planning to travel with a small cabin suitcase? Try to pack it so you can easily keep it organized. Before departure, check that your suitcase contains all the necessary items on your list. Also remember that carry-on luggage is size-restricted – to save space, try rolling clothes instead of folding them. Put small items and accessories in empty spaces.
