A padlock and a luggage scale are two small accessories that solve the two most common problems travelers face: luggage security and weight before check-in. A padlock makes it harder for your suitcase to be opened accidentally or without authorization. TSA padlock - for flights to the USA

A padlock with the TSA system has a special lock that US aviation security officers (Transportation Security Administration) can open with a universal key without damaging the padlock or the suitcase. This is important on flights to the United States or with a layover in the USA. During an inspection, luggage with an ordinary padlock may be forced open. TSA padlocks are marked with a distinctive red diamond symbol.

Combination padlock - no key needed

A combination padlock opens with a number code that you set yourself. You don't have to keep track of a key that is easy to lose while traveling. It is a convenient solution for a suitcase as well as a backpack, a locker at the pool or in a hostel.

Luggage scale - check your suitcase before you leave

Airlines set luggage weight limits. For checked baggage they are most often 20 or 23 kg, and with low-cost airlines carry-on limits can be even stricter. Exceeding the limit usually means a fee at the airport, often higher than the cost of adding baggage online.

How to choose a padlock and a luggage scale?

If you are flying to or via the USA, choose a padlock with the TSA system. For other trips, backpacks and lockers, a combination padlock will be convenient, and if you have several bags it is worth having a set of padlocks with the same code. When choosing a padlock, also check the thickness of the shackle so that it fits the lock loops on your suitcase.

With a luggage scale, pay attention to the maximum load (it should clearly exceed your luggage limit), a readable display, a tare function and a comfortable handle that makes it easier to lift a heavy suitcase.
